The former head of a Pittsburgh-area hospice who allegedly used patients that weren’t terminally ill to collect millions of dollars in false Medicare and Medicaid billings is scheduled to plead guilty.
Former Horizons Hospice chief operating officer Mary Ann Stewart was indicted in Pittsburgh last year on one count of health care fraud and four counts of lying to a federal grand jury. One of the grand jury counts has been dismissed. She previously pleaded not guilty, but was scheduled to change that plea at 2 p.m. Thursday before a federal judge in Pittsburgh.
Prosecutors say the fraud cost the government unspecified millions of dollars from January 2008 through August 2012 at the facility in Monroeville, about 15 miles east of Pittsburgh.
Stewart’s defense attorney didn’t immediately return a call and email for comment.
